The ImmersaDesk is a projection-based large format virtual environment system. Using stereo glasses, head and hand tracking, and an 82 1/2" screen, this system offers a type of virtual reality that is semi-immersive. The ImmersaDesk features a rear-projected screen that can be adjusted from 45-degrees to a 90-degree angle, enabling the user to look down over a three dimensional world, or to have a look through a window into one. The resolution is 1024 x 768 at 96Hz. The high refresh rate supports full 'shutterglass' stereo projection, driven by an SGI Onyx2. We are running several software packages to diplay virtual oceanographic worlds: Cave5D, VTK, and a new package (vGeo) developed by our co-investigators at Old Dominion University.
