PMEL ADCPs are set to record measurements in 44 depth cells
using 8.68 meter nominal bin widths.
When
the ADCP converts the time traveled by the acoustic beam to a range from the
transducer, it assumes a sound speed of 1475.1 m/s. For our systems, (with
heads at 20 degrees from vertical) this results in a nominal bin width of 8.68
m as the vertical distance between successive depth cells.
To
correct the bin widths for sound velocity:
actual bin width = nominal bin width * C /
1475.1 m/s
where C is
the mean sound velocity for a given depth bin interval.
